Everything relating to the armed services is of great significance for the city and its people. These include the arsenal, the military hospital and the castles and forts that border the bay of Cartagena, all architectural features for the defence of the city. The Christmas Fort has great importance due to its strategic location for the defensive system of the bay of Cartagena. It occupies an imposing position near to sea level with the aim of observing and flanking the mouth of the bay. Built in the mid 19th century, the Christmas Fort is a fundamental element for the western part of the bay of Cartagena, comprising of an architectural landmark that soars over its surroundings.
